OBU, Victoria - Island Nite 2006 by Glen Joseph
For the third consecutive year, St. Benedict’s College Old Boys Union Victoria Inc. succeeded in hosting a sell-out winter warmer on April 1 at Sacred Heart Parish Hall, Oakleigh, playing host to 380 patrons. The sudden change in the Melbourne weather was not going to dampen the party spirit of the Benedictines, parking restrictions at the venue or various other high profile events on the same night notwithstanding

Sydney Bens runners-up in prestigious six-a-side tourney by SRI FERNANDOPULLE
Fresh from defeating the Old Josephians in the
traditional Over-40 clash, the rejuvenated Old Bens entered a team for the Over-40s six-a-side tournament organised by a leading cricket establishment and finally ended up as worthy 'runners up'.
This was due to the great performances of Bens skipper, the 'evergreen' Tony Appathurai -a former Ben, Tamil Union and New South Wales Grade cricketer and others like Clement Christie-David, Ronnie Almeida, Prakash Fernandopulle, Julian Pillai, Malcolm de Zilwa and Kevin Pereira (an Old Joe who likes to be with the Old Bens).
The team won 7 matches on the trot and due to heavy pressure and fading light, were beaten in a close encounter in the final.
Sports - SBC over-40s Cricket Champions by Ravi Illugalbandara
Our Old Bens Veterans (Over 40) Cricket Team once again proved why they are best by winning the St. Sebastian's Invitational (to commemorate their 75th Year celebrations) Cricket tournament by defeating a combined old boys' team from various colleges (Cavaliers), that also included some of our Old Benedictines of repute like Kumar Ramanathan, Basil Perera, Rohan Wanaguru and Chandra Rodrigo. They also had some ex Sri Lankan Test and One Players such as Champaka Ramanayake, Hemal Mendis, Daya Sirisena, Jerome Jayarathen, Deepal Madurapperuma, Senaka Angulugaha and S. Illangaratnam.
The Bens were not fancied to win but with a great team effort ably led by Gihan Perera beat the Cavaliers in the final very convincingly by 5 wickets and 2 overs to spare.
The Bens beat Old Cambrians (Prince of Wales) that also had a star-studded team comprising our present college coach and ex-Sri Llanka opening batsman Bandula De Silva and Premlal Fernando, Wasanthalal Fernando, Jayalath Aponso, Test Umpire Gamini Silva and many more outstanding past players.
The Bens also accounted for the other trophies. Lalith Fernando was the Best Batsman and the fine all round performance of Rohan Ranasinghe won him the Man of the Match award. Champaka Ramanayake was chosen as the Best Bowler.
The Champion Bens team comprised:
Gehan Perera (Captain), Lalith Fernando, Malcolm Rodrigo, Ranil Perera, Rohan Ranasinghe, Denzil Perera, Mohan Saverimuttu, Dinesh Madawela, Ravi Irugalbandara, Suresh Marcellus, Lalith De Silva and Delly Fernando (12th Man).
