REV. BR. RAPHAEL RODRIGO FSC, De La Salle Brother, former Primary Principal of St. Benedict’s College - Kotahena passed away peacefully on 5th October 2017.

Funeral took place today, 7th October 2017 at Madampitiya Cemetery.

It is with profound sadness that we inform the demise of Old Benedictine Robert Joseph (83), dearly beloved choir master to many Benedictines of yesteryear. Loving father of Old Benedictine Trevin Joseph (85 Batch).

Remains lie at residence No. 415/6 Bloemendhal Road, Colombo -13

Funeral will take place tomorrow, Sunday 8th October 2017 at 3.30 p.m. for burial at Madampitiya cemetery.

Channa Goonetilleke Heads Old Bens Sports Club
Major General Channa Goonetilleke, former Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, was elected President of Old Benedictines Sports Club at the AGM held on Friday 29th September 2017 at the Clubhouse.
In his address he mentioned that he intended to work closely with Rev. Bro. Director of St. Benedict's College to improve the standard of Sports at College and the Club and emphasized the importance of governance and regulation upholding traditions, values and discipline inculcated by SBC and to move forward for the benefit of the College and the community by setting the trend.

He thanked the outgoing President Malsiri Perera who held the post for the past 04 years, for his contribution and loyalty to College and the committee members for serving the Club with commitment and dedication over the years, making much improvement to raise the standard of the Club.

The meeting was followed by fellowship dinner where Mexican Food was introduced at the Club.

The sesquicentennial magazine is finally printed (432 Pages) and is available for purchase at the College Welfare Office during school days before 2.30 pm.

There are a very limited number of the hard cover book with a dust jacket covering available on a first come first serve basis. This limited edition is priced at Rs.5,000/-

The soft cover book is priced at Rs.2,500/-

St. Benedict’s College Champs at All Island Schools Relay Championship 2017
SportDefending champions St. Benedict’s College, Colombo (83 points) won the overall boys’ titles as the All Island Schools Relay Championship 2017 sponsored by Nestle Lanka and concluded at the Doreiappa Ground, Jaffna on 10TH Sep 2017. Maristella College Negombo was the runners up with 71 points followed by Rathayake MMV Walala with 60 points.

Champion schools - U-20 boys’ - Maris Stella College - Negombo, U-18 boys’ - St. Benedict’s College - Colombo, U-16 boys’ - Dharmapala College - Pannipitiya, U-14 boys’ - St. Peter’s College - Colombo, U-12 boys’ - Trinity College - Kandy.

Bens also won the under 18 overall championship by winning the 4x100, 4x 200 , Medley relay and second place in the one lap relay . Bens won gold in the 4x 200 and Medley relay and silver in the sprint relay in the under 20 category. Bens also went on to win the gold In the Under 16 sprint relay.
The Benedictine junior team also excelled, winning the Bronze Medal in 4x 50 meters in under 12 age group.

St. Benedict’s (1.32.3). 2. Maris Stella Negombo (1.33.1). 3. St Peter’s Colombo (1.33.9). Boys U18 – 4x400m – 1. A. Ratnayake MMV Walala (3.29.5). 2. St. Benedict’s (3.39.9). 3. St Sylvester’s (3.30.0).

The Benedictines have already won the Saints' Quadrangular Athletic Meet , Colombo zonal , Western Province and were runners up in senior John Tarbet Athletic Meet in 2017 season.

Our heartfelt congratulations to the Benedictine athletes for bringing glory and honour to our beloved school, Rev. Bro. Director for his leadership, Rev. Bro. Praveen Vaz (Sports Coordinator), POG, MIC, The Athletic Wing and Old Boys of SBC for their guidance and support and not forgetting the parents for their encouragement.

JOES - BENS meet in All- Island Schools Tournament Opener 2017
St. Joseph’s College, Maradana will take on St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena in the Sri Lanka Schools All-Island tournament opener match on Monday, 4th September 2017 at 4.00 p.m. at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Clean sweep for Old Peterites at the Golden Jubilee Saints Quadrangular Tourney 2017
The Golden Jubilee Saints Quadrangular Tournament hosted by St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota and worked off in Kandy during the weekend (26th & 27th August), saw Old Peterites winning all the events (Cricket, Basketball and Rugby).

Rugby - Old Peterites stamped their class, winning the sevens tournament beating the host 40/07 at Nittawela.

Cricket – (Over 40’s) Antonians fell short by 12 runs against the Peterites in the finals played at Asgiriya.

Cricket – (Under 40’s) Old Peterites overcame their traditional rivals Old Joes by 31 runs in the finals played at Katugastota.

Basketball – Old Peterites continued their supremacy in the tournament winning the basketball event outshining Old Josephians by 71/48.

The Josephians lead the series tally with 16 wins in the main cricket tournament while the Antonians lead the series tally in the over 40’s with seven wins. The Benedictines have dominated the basketball with 10 wins in 12 editions whiles the Peterites have won the rugby tournament thrice in four competitions.

Former Benedictine Cricket Captain, Joe Savarimuttupulle graced the occasion as Chief Guest whiles Rev. Fr. Henry Wijeratne - Principal St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota was present as guest of honor.

Among the other dignitaries present were, Premalal de Silva - Antonian Cricket Captain in 1973, Rev. Fr. Eugine Silva, Rev. Fr. Niranjan Wijeratne, (all from St. Anthony’s College , Katugastota), Wilhelm Brown, President SACK OBA - Colombo Branch, Malsiri Perera President OBSC, Preethiraj de Silva, President OJSC & Asela Lihinikaduwa, President POBU. Ranjit Peiris, President and Srilal de Silva Treasure (both from Saints Quad. Main Board)

Main Quad : (50 overs a side)

1st Semi Final - (reduced to 40 overs a side) : Old Josephians beat Old Antonians by 05 wickets.
Old Antonians - 144 in 34.3 overs & Old Joes 147 for 5 in 35.3 overs.

2nd Semi Final - Old Peterites beat Old Bens by 08 wickets.
Old Bens - 231/8 in 50 Overs & Old Peterites – 232/2 in 20.1 overs.

Final - (reduced to 40 overs a side ) : Old Peterites beat Old Josephians by 31 runs.
Old Peterites : 252 in 39.4 overs and Old Josephians : 221 in 37.5 overs

Old Peterites beat Old Joes 71/48 in the Final played at Gateway College Courts, Kandy

50th Saints Quadrangular 2017
The 50th Saints Quadrangular involving Old Boys of the four premier Catholic Schools namely St. Anthony's, Katugastota, St. Benedict's, St. Joseph's and St. Peter's, will be held on 26th & 27th August 2017, in Kandy.

Old Bens Cricket Carnival 2017 - A Resounding Success
The Six a Side Softball Cricket Tournament organized jointly by The Old Bens Sports Club and the College Cricket Wing was held on 29th & 30th July 2017 at the College Grounds after a lapse of 03 years and was a resounding success with the event organisers achieving their objectives. Past Cricket Capt. Denzil Perera was the Chairman of the Joint Organising Committee that comprised 21 members from the OBSC and the SBC Cricket Wing.

Past Cricket Captain and the POG at SBC , Mr. & Mrs. Vivian Saverymuthapulle were the Chief Guests.
The tournament for Old Boys Under 40 & Over 40 categories were worked out with 32 & 12 teams participating respectively.

The Under 40s trophy in memory of the Past College Cricketer Late Bernard Shanmuganathan was donated by the family & was won by the Combined Past Cricketers Team and the Over 40s trophy in Memory of the Past College Captain and Coach Late Mr. Terrence Perera was donated by his son Mr. Tyronne Perera and was won by the 87 batch. Coincidently Tyronne was also the compere for the event.

Food Stalls with BBQ , Hot dogs, a Beer garden and DJ Music drew a large crowd of Old Boys & their families on both days. There was a get together at the Clubhouse soon after the event on Sunday.

With generous Sponsorships from the main Sponsors Mobil & Phoenix along with Radio & Media sponsorship from KISS FM and a Silver sponsorship from the Local Clothes Store Zuzi & Commercial Credit and many other donors from OBA in UK & Old Boys from, Canada, USA , Australia, Bahrain & Old Boys and Past Cricketers from SL made achievement of the target possible.

The monies thus raised will go for the development of Cricket at College at all levels and also for Sports activities of Old Bens Sports Club who are in the Inter club arena in 05 major Sports.

Due to the popularity and its success the Organisers are very optimistic & keen to have the event on a regular basis at least once in 02 years in the future.

College Hall Redevelopment Project - "Donate an Auditorium Chair"
Dear Benedictines,

Would like to inform you that the College hall redevelopment project is in progress and nearing completion.

From the self-explanatory letter attached from Rev. Bro. Director, you will observe that the College is in need of financial assistance to complete the project and Rev. Bro. Director is appealing to all Overseas branches, groups, batches and Old Boys' to assist by way of sponsoring Auditorium Chairs @ LKR 15,000/- each.

Calling all Bens to rally round in support / contribute and be a part of this project.

Annual Prize Giving of St. Benedicts College
The Annual Prize Giving of St. Benedicts College was held on a grand scale at the College premises on Friday 7th July 2017. Distinguished Old Benedictine Dr. Anthony Cyril Ernest (consultant physician and cardiologist in USA) and his charming wife Mrs. Indrani Ernest graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Rev. Fr. Ivan Perera (General Manager of Catholic Schools) and Rev. Bro. Christy Croos (Provincial visitor of the De La Salle Brothers) were present as special invitees.

Among those present were, Rev. Bro. Henry Dissanayake (Director - St. Benedicts College), Rev. Bro. Niran Perera (Sub Director),Rev. Bro. Benedict Bonaventure (Principal of the Primary Section), Rev. Bro. Pravin Vaz (Sports Co-ordinator), Rev. Bro. Bertram Perera, Rev. Bro. Granville Perera, Rev. Bro. Nimal Gurusinghe, Rev. Bro. Janaka Fonseka and Rev. Bro. Pubudu Dissanayake.

The Bede Puvimannasinghe Challenge Trophy and Architect Ranjan Nadesapillai prize for THE BEST SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR was won by Geethal Fernando.

Challenge Shield and prize donated by the Pathinather family in Australia for THE BEST ALL ROUND STUDENT OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOL was won by Nathan Vidusha Fernando of 5B.

The 1964 Champion Cricket Team Gold Medal and St. Benedicts Old Boys Union Prize for THE BEST ALL ROUND STUDENT was won by Melfrod Suren Weerasinghe of 2016 A/L Batch.
