Old Bens Cricket Carnival 2017 - A Resounding Success
The Six a Side Softball Cricket Tournament organized jointly by The Old Bens Sports Club and the College Cricket Wing was held on 29th & 30th July 2017 at the College Grounds after a lapse of 03 years and was a resounding success with the event organisers achieving their objectives. Past Cricket Capt. Denzil Perera was the Chairman of the Joint Organising Committee that comprised 21 members from the OBSC and the SBC Cricket Wing.

Past Cricket Captain and the POG at SBC , Mr. & Mrs. Vivian Saverymuthapulle were the Chief Guests.
The tournament for Old Boys Under 40 & Over 40 categories were worked out with 32 & 12 teams participating respectively.

The Under 40’s trophy in memory of the Past College Cricketer Late Bernard Shanmuganathan was donated by the family & was won by the “Combined Past Cricketers Team” and the Over 40’s trophy in Memory of the Past College Captain and Coach Late Mr. Terrence Perera was donated by his son Mr. Tyronne Perera and was won by the 87’ batch. Coincidently Tyronne was also the compere for the event.

Food Stalls with BBQ , Hot dogs, a Beer garden and DJ Music drew a large crowd of Old Boys & their families on both days. There was a get together at the Clubhouse soon after the event on Sunday.

With generous Sponsorships from the main Sponsors Mobil & Phoenix along with Radio & Media sponsorship from KISS FM and a Silver sponsorship from the Local Clothes Store Zuzi & Commercial Credit and many other donors from OBA in UK & Old Boys from, Canada, USA , Australia, Bahrain & Old Boys and Past Cricketers from SL made achievement of the target possible.

The monies thus raised will go for the development of Cricket at College at all levels and also for Sports activities of Old Bens Sports Club who are in the Inter club arena in 05 major Sports.

Due to the popularity and its success the Organisers are very optimistic & keen to have the event on a regular basis at least once in 02 years in the future.

College Hall Redevelopment Project - "Donate an Auditorium Chair"
Dear Benedictines,

Would like to inform you that the College hall redevelopment project is in progress and nearing completion.

From the self-explanatory letter attached from Rev. Bro. Director, you will observe that the College is in need of financial assistance to complete the project and Rev. Bro. Director is appealing to all Overseas branches, groups, batches and Old Boys' to assist by way of sponsoring Auditorium Chairs @ LKR 15,000/- each.

Calling all Bens to rally round in support / contribute and be a part of this project.

Annual Prize Giving of St. Benedict’s College
The Annual Prize Giving of St. Benedict’s College was held on a grand scale at the College premises on Friday 7th July 2017. Distinguished Old Benedictine Dr. Anthony Cyril Ernest (consultant physician and cardiologist in USA) and his charming wife Mrs. Indrani Ernest graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Rev. Fr. Ivan Perera (General Manager of Catholic Schools) and Rev. Bro. Christy Croos (Provincial visitor of the De La Salle Brothers) were present as special invitees.

Among those present were, Rev. Bro. Henry Dissanayake (Director - St. Benedict’s College), Rev. Bro. Niran Perera (Sub Director),Rev. Bro. Benedict Bonaventure (Principal of the Primary Section), Rev. Bro. Pravin Vaz (Sports Co-ordinator), Rev. Bro. Bertram Perera, Rev. Bro. Granville Perera, Rev. Bro. Nimal Gurusinghe, Rev. Bro. Janaka Fonseka and Rev. Bro. Pubudu Dissanayake.







































The ‘Bede Puvimannasinghe Challenge Trophy’ and ‘Architect Ranjan Nadesapillai prize’ for THE BEST SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR was won by Geethal Fernando.








































Challenge Shield and prize donated by the Pathinather family in Australia for THE BEST ALL ROUND STUDENT OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOL was won by Nathan Vidusha Fernando of 5B.








































The 1964 Champion Cricket Team Gold Medal and St. Benedicts Old Boys’ Union Prize for THE BEST ALL ROUND STUDENT was won by Melfrod Suren Weerasinghe of 2016 A/L Batch.

Claude House wins Inter House Swimming Meet 2017

Claude house with 249 points emerged champions at the Inter House Swimming Meet 2017 held on 26th June, at St. Benedict’s College, "Bro. Granville Perera Aquatic Centre".

St. Benedict’s College Swimming complex named after Rev. Bro. Granville Perera (Past Director) who was a dynamic and charismatic Director of the school, graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Luke House with 165 points was adjudged runners-up with Camillius House and Cassian House finishing 3rd and 4th with 118 and 113 points respectively.

The following swimmers won the respective age group Championships.

Under 13 Imalka Perera
Under 15 Kleyonr Jayawardana
Under 17 Nethum Weerasuriya

Bens emerge Champions in Western province Athletic Meet
SportSt. Benedict's College continue their dominance in Athletics by winning the Western province meet 2017 , held at the Mahinda Rajapakse stadium , Diyagama from 19- 22nd June .

With a tally of 200 points, Bens beat 2016 All Islands School Champions Mari Stella by pushing them to second place (163 points) and Lyceum Wattala With 93 points to third place.

In addition to the overall Championship Bens also won the relay championship .

Bens star Athlete Dilan Bogoda won 400 meters under 18, and came second in 400 meters hurdles , he anchored the 4x400 meters relay team to win the Gold medal and also member of the winning 4x100 meters relay team .

Yohan Silva won 100, 200 meters sprint (under 18 ) in style . Tiran Mahara won the 800 meters , Prageeth won under 20 Javalin .

Bens won under 12, 16,18,20 - 4x100 Meters relays and under 18, 20 - 4x400 Meters relays .

Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to the College authorities, Athletic Wing, sponsors and parents for their generous support.

Bens will now be focused to win the Sir John Tarbert Senior Championship and All Island School Championship 2017.

Obituary – Rev. Bro. Emmanuel Nicholas - De La Salle Brother (Old Benedictine)
Obituary
Sad to inform the passing away of Old Benedictine, Rev. Bro. Emmanuel Nicholas - De La Salle Brother (Was called to his eternal reward last evening, 14th June 2017)

Late Bro. Emmanuel was the former Provincial Visitor (1988-1991) and Founder Chairman of Lasallian Community Educational Services (LCES), He was a Brother for 60 years. He served as a missionary in Pakistan for about 20 years and returned to Sri Lanka in 1980 to serve as a Brothers' formator, Brother Auxiliary Visitor and Brother Visitor. LCES was his brain child, through which he served the poorer communities in Colombo 15.

Late Bro. Emmanuel also served as the Sub-Director of St. Benedict’s College, ( 2010 to 2011) under the Directorship of Rev. Bro. Granville Perera, subsequent to being appointed as Director, Institute of Spiritual Formation of Asia at Mutwal.

Funeral will take place at Madampitiya cemetery on Friday, 16th June 2017 after Holy Mass at 3.00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Novitiate Chapel in Mutwal.

01.30 p.m. Remains will be at LCES, 25 Temple Road, Mutwal.
06.00 p.m. To St. Joseph's Chapel, 130 De La Salle Street, Mutwal.
06.45 p.m. Thanksgiving Mass

Burial at Madampitiya Cemetery

113th Annual General Meeting of St. Benedict's College Old Boys' Union - Sunday 18th June 2017
The Annual General Meeting of St. Benedict’s College Old Boys’ Union will be held on Sunday 18th June 2017 at the College premises, preceded by Holy Mass commencing 9.00 a.m. which will be presided over by His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Fidelis Fernando(Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo and Past Benedictine) and concelebrated by Old Benedictine priests, Rev. Dr. Noel Dias and newly ordained Old Benedictine Rev. Fr. Rajitha Liyanage.

All Members are cordially invited to rally together at this prestigious event of the Old Boys’ Union, as we celebrate 113 years of loyal and dedicated service to our Alma Mater.

The annual session will be followed by a fellowship lunch and get-together at the Old Bens Sports Club.

De LaSalle Day - Celebrated at St. Benedict’s College
The feast of our patron saint, St. De La Salle was celebrated at St. Benedict’s College on Friday, 19th May 2017 at the college premises. Silver jubilarians Mrs. Dharshani Fernando and Mr. Srilal Vithanage were also felicitated for their twenty five years’ service in the teaching profession.

Newly ordained Old Benedictine Rev. Fr. Rajitha Liyanage was also welcomed to college and joined in the celebrations.

Rifle Shooting at St. Benedict’s College
CollegeRifle shooting, a sports discipline where Sri Lanka could reach the Olympic standards has reached grass root level. Schools today are elated that rifle shooting was accepted by the Ministry of Education. Today the sport is recognized, identified and approved as an appropriate sport for youngsters at school level.

St. Benedict’s College too, has now introduced Rifle shooting in view to bring out and mould young individuals to occupy their minds and vision with more self-confidence, self-encouragement and perseverance, while improving teamwork, talent and leadership qualities.

In view to promote the sport in College, the batch of 87 took the initiative in donating three rifles to the college whiles juvenile Ben Dhesaka Seneveratne too came forward to donate a rifle for the College.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations were held in the primary section on Friday, 5th May 2017.

Rev. Bro. Henry Dissanayake – Director SBC, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and former Staff member Mrs. Helen Gunawardana as the guest of honour.
