The College Choir celebrates 15 years of continuous service
CollegeThe Choir of St. Benedict’s College celebrated a tradition of 15 years of continuous praise, worship and service to the Catholic Church since it’s revival in 1996. A thanks giving Mass was offered for the wonderful blessings and fulfillments the Lord had provided through the years, on Friday 11th February 2011 at St. Lucia's Cathedral.

”St. Benedict’s College has a long standing history of Choral music dating back to the early 1900s. As far as we can trace the first choir was prompted by Mr. Bonnie Fonseka a teacher of College who served the College for over 40 years. Thereafter, one of his students, Mr. Robert Joseph took up the responsibility to train the young Choristers, followed by Mr. Francis De Almeida, Mr. Jhonpulle & Rev. Bro.Augustine as choir masters.

After a period of silence, Mr. Ravien George, revived the Choir 15 years ago. Since then the choir was elevated to very high classical standards and became All Island Champions in 1999 and earned a very high reputation of being the best Classical Choir in Sri Lanka.” said Choir Master Mr. Krishan Rodrigo.

The Choir of St. Benedict’s College has strong values and traditions, which are still well maintained. It has produced and continues to produce strong believers and God fearing men to the Society who will give their ever loyal service to the Catholic Church. The Choir is not all about music, but unity, discipline, truthfulness, sincerity, loyalty and undying faith, but mostly a passion that choristers young and old will treasure & cherish for the rest of their lives.

Yesterday, marked a significant milestone in the musical career of young Krishan Rodrigo. On this day, after a successful decade of choral directing, he has the distinction of being one of the long standing choral directors of the Benedictine choral history. Having started music direction at 19, Krishan is possibly the youngest Chorus director, the country has ever seen.

Master Dilanka Silva and Master Kasun Wekasinghe were elected as choir leader and deputy leader respectively, for the year 2011.
