Old Joes to host Saints Quadrangular - 25 Aug 07
OBU, ColomboOld Joes to host Saints Quadrangular tomorrow
By M. Shamil Amit

The annual Saints Quadrangular cricket and basketball tournament featuring St. Benedict’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Peter’s and St. Anthony’s will be worked off on August 25 and 26. The two tournaments this year will be hosted by St Joseph’s with ABC Credit Card coming forward as the main sponsor.

The cricket tournament - which is the 40th in the series - will be played at three venues: at St. Peter’s Grounds in Bambalapitiya, St. Benedict’s Grounds in Kotahena and St. Joseph’s Grounds at Darley Road. The basketball tournament will be played at St. Joseph’s basketball courts at Darley Road.

This was revealed at a press briefing held at the Old Joes SC (OJSC) premises, Darley Road. Yohan de Silva, President of the OJSC briefing the media stated that the idea of staging this tournament, which was inaugurated in 1963, was initiated by the Old Boys Union of St. Benedict’s in conjunction with their diamond jubilee celebrations.

The quadrangular cricket tournament apart from the years 1970, 78 and 89 has been held with each team hosting it on a rotation basis. St. Anthony’s Katugastota, which is the oldest of the four schools, had the honour of winning the first tournament which was led by all rounder Harry Jayasundara.

The cricket tournament will be held with the old boys of the participating teams contesting for laurels under the young and veteran old boy categories in an exciting 25 over cricket tournament.

The four sides are billed to field top cricketers of the past who have played at international level.

The tournament has no doubt been a stage in fostering fellowship and harmony amongst the four schools stated the Sohan Perumal, Secretary of the OJSC and it has been keenly contested as the series tally clearly indicates.

Of the 39 main quadrangular tournaments played so far three teams Old Bens, Old Petes and Old Joes are on equal terms with 11 wins while the Old Antonians have nine wins to their credit. In the veteran’s which was started in the year 2002 Old Bens are leading with three wins while Old Antonians and Old Petes have one each.

The two day tournament will get under way with the semi finals of the two tournaments being played tomorrow from 9.30 a.m. onwards.

The schedule matches: Old Josephians vs Old Peteries at Darley Road and Old Benedictines vs Old Antonians at Kotahena. Veteran’s tournament (25 overs) – Old Josephinas vs Old Peterites and Old Benedictines vs Old Antonians at Bambalaptiyia.

The finals will be played on Sunday with the main quadrangular at Darley Road and the veteran’s at Bambalapitiya from 9.30 a.m. onwards.

The semi final and final of the basketball tournament will be played on Sunday from 8.30 a.m. onwards with the final to be played at 3.30 p.m.
