TENNIS takes a new turn at ST. BENEDICTíS COLLEGE
|Tennis at St. Benedictís College was at itís peak in the 1950ís and 1960ís. During this period St. Benedictís College had produced a number of talented tennis players, who took part in local as well as international tournaments. Everad Rathnayake, Cyril Ernest, Ranjith Fernando, George Jayatilake, Anton Gunaratna, Nihal Amarasinghe, Anton Abesekara, Lasantha Fernando and Joe Rathnayake are some of them who brought fame and glory to College. The tennis court was then located where the current Swimming Pool Complex is situated. However, due to unknown reasons the standard of the game took a nose dive and was revived in the 1980ís under the guidance and leadership of Rev. Bro. Directorsí who served college.|
St. Benedictís College emerged runners up in the Junior Category, at the All Island Schools competition in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and champions amongst Boysí Schools in 1995 despite having to relocate its tennis court at various points in college. Benedictine, Franklyn Emmanuel, started his tennis career in 1998 and became National Champion at a tender age of 14. He went on to be the Asian Champion, in a short period of time, and was also a member of the National Team.
The need for a permanent tennis court was discussed from time to time, but not materialized, resulting in the sport once again declining due to the lack of facilities and interest for the game amongst the students.
The interest for the game, took a dramatic change, with the arrival of the new director, Rev. Bro. Henry Dissanayake, who permitted tennis to be played at the quadrangle, with the availability of three hard tennis courts, and a qualified, professional tennis coach.
We hope that the students will now take good use of the current facilities available and bring back the glory days of tennis to St. Benedictís College.
