Merril J. Perera completes 50 years in the teaching profession

Master Merril, as most students affectionately knew him at St. Benedict’s College, Colombo, celebrates 50 years in the noble profession as a teacher this year.

He was born on January 31st, 1946 to Paul Michael Perera and Dorothy Jesmin, and had his education up to the Advance Level at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 10.

On January 17th, 1966, on the recommendation of the late Bro. James, he was appointed a teacher under the directorship of the late Rev. Bro. Flavian Wilathgamuwa, who was later ordained as a priest and served in the USA.

Initially, Master Merril taught students history, geography, maths, arithmetic and English in year 6 and later moved on to the 7, 8 & 9 classes.

He devoted 38 years of his teaching career to St. Benedict’s College, and after retirement, taught at Aquinas University College (English Department) and Leighton Park International School, where he is now employed.

During his long tenure at St. Benedict’s College, he was a class teacher and also in charge of prefects, visiting class teacher, senior supervisor and Head Master of the Upper School. He also served as house master of Christian House and overall, made a significant contribution towards the progress of the college and its standard of education.

The tutorial staff at St. Benedict's, with Master Merril playing a pivotal role, served their chosen profession with profound dedication to mould students to be worthy and useful citizens to their motherland and to the world at large.

The names of all those Benedictines were positively impacted by his tutelage are too numerous to list here, but I recall a few who were my classmates from the mid 1960s up to the early 70s, who reached the pinnacle of success in their chosen careers –- Rev. Bro. Nimal Gunasinghe, former Acting Director, St. Benedict’s College, Rev. Bro. Augustine Fernando, Director, De Lasalle Academy, Ruan Samarasinghe, Managing Director, Jetwing Hotels, Rohan Upali De Silva, Managing Director, Mclarens Ltd., Jayantha Perera, former DGM (International) Hatton National Bank (who is now a banking magnate in Solomon Islands), Chandra Edirisinghe, Managing Director, (Edirisinghe Bros), Rohan Jayawardena, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ravi Dias, former CEO, Commercial Bank (At present CEO, Senkadagala Finance), Earnest Egodawatte, a practicing lawyer (Civil and Commercial), Colombo High Court, Mr. Neomal Suraweera, Former Deputy General Manager, Seylan Bank and Mr. Seevali Godamunne, Engineer (Sydney)

Sir, we salute your dedication and commitment towards thousands of students who went through your tutelage and are holding top positions in Sri Lanka and in other parts of the world.

In whatever country they may be domiciled, past Benedictines who were moulded by Master Merril know how much he meant to them and the sacrifices he made to guide them to reach the apex in life.

Sir, you have fulfilled a task which cannot be measured or valued monetarily. We, as past students, humbly seek God to bless you in abundance in all what you aspire and to bestow health, happiness and contentment in the years to come.
