Benedictine Walk – A grand success
|The much awaited Benedictine Walk, coinciding with the 150th Jubilee celebrations of St. Benedict’s College was held in a grand scale on 7th February 2015 amidst a very large gathering of Old Benedictine Priest, De La Salle Brothers, Rev. Sisters, members of the tutorial staff, students, parents, past teachers, old boys and their families and well-wishers.|
The proceedings got underway at 2.45 pm., with the hoisting of the National Flag, College Flag and the De La Salle Flag by His Worship the Mayor of Colombo A.J.M. Muzammil, Rev. Bro. Director Janaka Fonseka and Rev. Bro. Provincial Visitor Denzil Perera respectively, to the music of the respective anthems played by the College Western Band.
This was followed by a Spiritual Blessing by His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Fernando, Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo, who is also an Old Benedictine and subsequently the WALK was flagged off by the Mayor of Colombo.
The parade, which was over two kilometers in length, took to the streets of Kotahena via Bonjean Road, Kotahena Roundabout, Hettiyawatta, Kochchikade, Jampettah Street, Armour Street, Bloemendhal Road and concluded at the College Grounds. The Carriage carrying the statue of St. Benedict, led the parade which was followed by a large number of well decorated floats representing the grades from the Primary up to the upper school, the respective sports and extracurricular activities at College, the board of prefects and western and eastern bands of the primary and upper school, Prefects from the surrounding catholic schools in Colombo, members from the associated organisations and unions including the Retired Teachers Association, OBU, DF, OBSC, Welfare Society, Past Prefects Union, Old Boarders Association, members representing the overseas Branches of the OBU, Batches, Horses, Elephants, Double Decker Buses, vintage cars and jeeps, modern vehicles such as Lamborghini and Porsche. The entire rout covered over three kilometers in length.
The atmosphere at the College Grounds was electrifying, with DJ Music, Food Stalls, Games Stalls, merry-go-round, Mini train rides,bouncers to entertainthe kids, enclosed Beer Garden exclusive for the adults with BBQ.
The main activities got underway with the internationally renowned choral group Vioce.Print, taking center stage in singing the College Anthem and also launching the Jubilee song “Pidumai Mei”, a dedication to St. Benedict’s College, which was followed by a string of fireworks that ignited the dark skies of Kotahena.
Famed Musical Bands “Marians”, “Doctor”, Rebels and Agnee with Old Ben Sivakumar entertained the large crowd that gathered at the College Grounds which concluded around 1.00 am on Sunday.
We thank the Lord Almighty, who showered his benevolent blessings upon us and gave us the courage and strength to overcome all obstacles and achieve success, Rev. Bro. Director, Rev. Brothers at College, Teachers, Parents and students, Old Boys, Sponsors, and not forgetting the energetic organizing committee, for putting one's shoulder to the wheel in ensuring the success of the walk of the decade.
