Choristers Excel at the Festival of Choirs 2014
Music fills the courts of heaven as heavenly beings praise our Lord and Creator. When God created the World, the morning stars sang together and all the angles shouted for joy (Job 38:7). As such, God created man in His own image and gave humans the ability to sing and to make music with musical instruments to complement the voice. From the introduction of the harp and flute early in Genesis to the song of the redeemed in Godís heavenly city, music fills the Holy Scriptures. In an attempt to glorify God through soulful pieces of music, the Ceylon Bible Society was proud to present the Festival of Choirs in celebrating the 202nd Anniversary on the 1st of August 2014 at 5.15pm at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.
The 22nd Festival of Choirs featuring over 221 choristers from the Choirs of Bishopís College, St. Peterís Church, Koralawella, Trinity College, Kandy, Sacred Heart Church, Rajagiriya, Living Way Church, Nugegoda, Stafford International School and St. Benedictís College blended as one to sing the praises of God with the participation of His Excellency Most Rev.Dr. Pierre Nguyen Van Tot, Apostolic Nuncio for Sri Lanka as the Guest of Honour , Rt. Fernando, General Secretary of the Ceylon Bible Society.
The performance by the Choir of St. Benedictís College was well appreciated by the congregation gathered and the note of appreciation quoted below, coming from Chief Guest Ms. Priyanthi Seneviratne Van dort - Choral Director of St. Bridgetís Convent was commendable.
Thank you for your mail, and I was actually looking out for you and the boys to congratulate you on your magnificent performance. As the Chief Guest for the Festival of Choirs, I was very proud of you, for the fact that you attempted such challenging choral works. Having worked with the Peterite Choir for 23 years and Choirs in general over the last 31 years I can vouch that it requires a great deal of commitment and passion to teach such difficult choral harmonies to school boys. It showed your skill and devotion and also I could sense that you being an Old boy yourself, desired to give your boys the best you possibly can in choral music. I do the same for the Bridgetine Choir being an old girl myself.
I was very impressed with the commitment your boys have put in to learn all those intricate harmonies, and more than everything I was so happy that as a Catholic College, St. Benedict's was able to stand shoulder to shoulder with other reputed choirs, and command the respect of the audience, with that wonderful blend. Your Sopranos were good, and so were the Alto's, Tenors and basses.
As in every performance in any choir, on and off there were mild mishaps which were eclipsed by your powerful singing. If you can try to work on those little shortcomings, and do some brushing up on those entries you would be brilliant and perfect.
Please convey my heartfelt Congratulations to the boys on an excellent performance, and for you I pray that you receive God's blessings to continue the great work you are doing in His Name, with the talent He has bestowed on you. May you continue to be a blessing to all the young ones who will pass through you, and through your talent, may your College continue to be a shining example to all, as you uphold the great choral traditions of the Catholic Church.
God Bless You and the boys.
Our heartfelt congratulations to the Benedictine Choir and Mr. Krishan Rodrigo for the performance that has brought much pride and honor to our Alma Mater.
