Royal Beat BENS to clinch National Schools Games Championship
|Royal College won the National Schools Games’ Basketball Tournament by beating the strong and defending champions St. Benedict's College by 68-53 in the final, played at the Royal College court yesterday (24th September 2012). |
The Royalists made inroads to the game in the second quarter after facing a setback in the first, where Bens dominated with a ten-point lead (16-6). Bens missed few easy baskets and re-bounds in the second quarter.
They also committed unnecessary fouls allowing Royalists to score on free-shots and gain control of the match by scoring 23 points while restricting Bens for 10 points in the second quarter. Royalists were three points ahead at half time (29-26).
Third quarter saw a point to point battle but the home team added 17 points against 15 of the visitors.
Though Bens fought hard, the strong Royalists maintained their lead and scored 22 points while only allowing opponents to score 12 points in the final quarter. Sameera Chanaka Senarath of Royal College who contributed with 22 points in the final was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
